Wet Systems

How Wet Systems Work

There are different types of sprinkler systems, namely dry, deluge, pre-action, and wet.

Dry and wet systems are the most common types of sprinkler systems available for installation and use.

Wet Sprinkler Systems

However, wet sprinkler systems are more reliable and easier to modify compared to dry sprinkler systems. At the same time, they are cheaper and easier to install and maintain. Wet systems are also more commonly used by businesses and households. In such installations, water is used to fill the pipes connected to the sprinklers. When the system detects fire, the sprinklers will automatically activate. Thus, water will immediately be released from the sprinkler heads. Water will be kept in pipes at all times, which will be readily available when the sprinkler head gets activated. For each location, pressure must be managed differently on the basis of available water supply. In some instances, the management of the pressure may require a fire pump.

Dry Sprinkler Systems

The installation of dry sprinkler systems will be suitable for environments being exposed to sub-zero temperatures, including walk-in refrigerators and parking garages. The advantage of dry over the wet system is that the former uses pressurised air or nitrogen while the latter uses nitrogen or pressurised air. During system activation, air pressure will drop and water will be released into the system and via the sprinklers. Nevertheless, dry systems are more costly as they are hard to maintain, since they are designed to work with more complex settings. Moreover, it would take a little bit longer for water to be released due to the fact that it still have to travel through the piping and sprinklers from the valve.

A wet system is also suitable when the route from your gutter down pipe is inaccessible towards your tank.

1

You can use a wet system for your home or business if the water tank available is a bit far from the capture point on your roof.

3

This is also applicable when you can harvest rainwater from multiple capture areas or downpipes.

Wet systems can be used in areas in which the temperature can be maintained for more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Take note that having wet systems in your area will facilitate immediate water discharge onto a fire.

This will also help control the situation a lot faster and prevent it from spreading outside the affected area.
